Lineup #119

Top 100 Songs of 2016.

Welcome to TML's inaugural Top 100 Songs post! In the past I've shied away from actually choosing my top 100 songs, and instead, as you might remember, put together my yearly Honor Roll on SoundCloud (click here to revisit them). These were always my favorite playlists to put together, but 2016 (for more reasons than just the music) looked a little bit different and warranted a different, and perhaps more refined year end playlist.

First, I've shifted my own music listening and discovery away from SoundCloud to Spotify. I'm not in love with the fact that this is happening, but given that it's much easier for everyone to access my Lineups on Spotify and Spotify's catalogue is much more expansive than it was when I started this blog over 2 years ago, it just makes sense. This and the fact that my own taste has shifted away from dance music and remixes towards a more diverse range of artists that again, are more easily accessible via Spotify. But if you're like me and are missing the days of SoundCloud discoveries on TML, fear not - there will be much more of that coming back in 2o17.

Second, after 118 playlists and 15 radio shows, I decided it was time to grow up, put a stake in the ground, and actually pick my top 100 tracks of the year. So here they are.

Originally the list was 149 songs long, so I had to impose a "max 2 tracks per album" rule. This dramatically shifted what the list looked like, but as I painstakingly removed multiple selections from Anderson .Paak, Blood Orange and A Tribe Called Quest with tears in my eyes, I reminded myself this was the adult thing to do (although I did break the rules for Kanye because I'm not fully grown up yet and neither is he). As I whittled down the rest of the list, I tried my best to incorporate music across genres and account for recency bias. The result is Lineup #119, and 7 hours and 2 minutes of the best of what 2016 had to offer.

A couple important things to note:

  1. There are a few very noteworthy absences from this list because of their lack of availability on Spotify - most notably songs from Beyoncé's Lemonade, a pair of incredible KAYTRANADA remixes and other SoundCloud tracks that never got official releases.
  2. Let's be honest - I did not even attempt to take on the gargantuan task of trying to rank these songs in any order, so the playlist you get is simply mixed for your optimal listening enjoyment.
  3. This list consists of only songs that got released in 2016. It goes without saying that there are very important songs that came into my life this past year that were released in years prior, but I had to put some boundaries in place or else you'd still be trying to get through the full playlist a year from now.

But, if you still haven't had enough of 2016 year end countdowns (spoiler alert: I have not), be sure to visit TML throughout this final(!) week of 2016 for more rankings of music things I loved this year.

Lastly, thank you for your all of your support throughout this past year. 2016 may not have been everyone's best year, but it certainly was a landmark year for The Monday Lineup and it would not have been nearly as special without each and every one of you. Here's to even more in 2017.

Until next Monday.
